Unesa Breaks MURI Record: 11,078 Book Reviews by Students – The Highest Number in Indonesia
Surabaya, 10 December 2025 – Universitas Negeri Surabaya (Unesa) has officially set a new Indonesian World Record Museum (MURI) in the category “Most Book Reviews by University Students” with a total of 11,078 valid reviews covering 3,191 different book titles. The record was achieved on Tuesday, 9 December 2025, at the Rectorate Auditorium, Lidah Wetan Campus II, Surabaya.
Initiated by the Unesa Library Technical Implementation Unit (UPT Perpustakaan), the program involved first-year students of the 2025/2026 academic year. Out of 11,207 submissions received, 11,078 reviews were declared valid after a rigorous verification process – marking the largest-scale student book-review activity ever recorded at an Indonesian university.
Rector of Unesa, Prof. Dr. Nurhasan, M.Kes. (widely known as Cak Hasan), emphasized that the record should serve as more than just a number.
“This MURI record must go beyond statistics. What truly matters is its impact on the quality of literacy among students and the wider community. Students must never be separated from books – whether printed or digital – because reading is both a demand of life and a requirement for the future,” Prof. Nurhasan stated firmly.
Head of UPT Perpustakaan Unesa, Suroto, S.Sos., M.Hum., explained that the achievement lays the foundation for the library’s transformation into an AI-based Smart Library and a digital repository, supporting the vision of a literate golden generation by 2045.
Unesa Campus 5 Secures 2nd Place
During the same ceremony, internal awards were announced, and Unesa Campus 5 proudly clinched 2nd place in the category “Faculty/Unit with the Highest Number of Book Reviews” across all Unesa campuses. This outstanding result highlights the exceptional enthusiasm and commitment of Campus 5 students to the university-wide literacy movement and significantly contributed to the national record.
On the same occasion, UPT Perpustakaan launched the weekly program “Perpus Muter Kampus Literacy Webinar Every Wednesday” and announced winners of several competitions, including:
- Library Literacy Video Competition
- Faculty/Unit with the Most Book Reviews
- Best Reading Space
In his closing remarks, Prof. Nurhasan extended special congratulations:
“My heartfelt congratulations to all students, especially Campus 5 for achieving 2nd place. Become agents of literacy wherever you are. This record is not the end – it is the beginning of a stronger reading culture at Unesa.”
With this MURI record and the remarkable performance of its regional campuses, Unesa further solidifies its position as a leading pioneer in strengthening literacy in Indonesian higher education.
